Omi night,

How to play Omi
Learn it in two minutes. Argue about it for years.
Teams
Four players, two teams. Partners sit opposite each other, so turns alternate between the teams.
Calling trump
Everyone gets 4 cards. The player after the dealer looks at theirs and names the trump suit, alone, without asking their partner. Then 4 more cards each.
The 5th card
Bad first four? The caller can ask for the 5th card instead. It is shown to everyone and its suit becomes trump, then the deal carries on.
Playing a hand
Everyone plays one card: that’s a hand. The caller starts. Play goes anticlockwise and you must play the same suit as the first card if you can. Otherwise play anything, including a trump.
Winning a hand
The highest trump wins it. No trump played? The highest card of the first card’s suit wins. The winner starts the next hand. 8 hands make a round.
Scoring
- +1 The team that called trump wins 5 or more of the 8 hands.
- +2 The other team beats the callers.
- +3 Kapothi: one team wins all 8 hands.
- 4–4 Nobody scores, and whoever wins the next round gets 1 extra.
Each team starts with 10 token cards. Every point you score takes a token from the other team. Take them all and you win.
Questions
- How much is Omi?
- Rs 499, once. Only the host needs it: whoever opens the table. Friends join with the code and play free, and there is no subscription.
- Can I try it before I pay?
- Yes. Play a free practice game against three penguin bots, right in your browser. No sign-in.
- Do we need bots?
- Only if you want them. Four friends play without any. If you are three, or two, the host can put a bot in any empty seat.
- What happens if someone’s phone dies?
- The game waits for them. After a minute the host can let a bot play their cards, and they take the seat back when they return.
- Which way does play go?
- Anticlockwise: the player on your right plays after you.
